Visiting the Statue of Liberty in NYC

Visiting the Statue of Liberty in NYC

When it comes to visiting New York City, there are several famous landmarks that are written at the top of our bucket list for the trip. We walk around Central Park, walk to the top of the Empire State Building, and eat authentic NYC pizza. One of the most celebrated landmarks in NYC, and around the world, is the Statue of Liberty.

The Statue of Liberty rests on Ellis Island and represents the best of the United States. Its history says that several cultures, religions, and ethnicities have come together to create a beautiful melting pot. It is often important to many to see and photograph this astounding U.S. landmark while on their trip to NYC.

Liberty Island Tours

There are several ways to get to the Statue Liberty. One of the best ways for most tourists is to book a Liberty Island cruise, which allows for an incredible view of the Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty. Some bigger packages even allow tours of Lady Liberty herself, and a trip to the crown (although only when you book months in advance).

Everyone Is Welcome

Many people take the Staten Island Ferry to help capture the Manhattan skyline – and perfectly capture the vastness and beauty of the Statue of Liberty. This ferry runs 24 hours a day and 7 days a week; although it is often crowded with tourists on deck taking photographs of the Statue of Liberty – it is free of charge.

There are also free, ranger-led tours available each day. These tours are available to the public and do not require any reservations ahead of time. Visitors will learn how and why the Statue of Liberty came to the United States and the history of Liberty Island.

If you do not want to take a boat along the river or take a cruise, head over to the Brooklyn Bridge. Walk across the bridge from the Brooklyn side and you’ll have a spectacular view of the Statue of Liberty. You can also see this famous landmark from the Museum of Jewish Heritage through tall picture windows, as well as from Battery Park near the Ritz Carlton.

Be Prepared

Which ever method you use to get to or see the Statue of Liberty, you’ll want to arrive early. Many tourists each year flock to see Lady Liberty, so make sure that you claim your spot as soon as you can. It is best to plan a visit for the first ferry of the day during the week; when lines can keep you waiting for an hour or more, you want to get as ahead of the crowd as you can.

Pack a picnic when you visit the Statue of Liberty, whether you are going to Liberty Island or taking a long ferry ride along the Hudson. Lines at the concession stands can be quite long and are often overpriced tourist traps. Bring blankets, sunblock, and water; prepare yourself for a day trip. If you can tour the crown, be prepared for a long walk.

New York City is often vibrant and changing, but there are simply those landmarks that everyone needs to see in their lifetime. The Statue of Liberty is certainly something to remind us all that freedom is never something to take advantage of. Book a cruise or hop on a ferry and take in the beauty of the American spirit.
