Last year my friend and travel buddy Jack Bonner and I were fortunate enough to spend 3 months traveling throughout the Americas as we looked for inspiration as to what to do with our lives. There were many notable memories that I have and lots of places which I would consider to be my favourite but there was one that really stood out to me after my trip, Mexico City.
The capital of Mexico is really increasing in terms of its popularity and many people have been asking me why they should visit this metropolis of a city. If you are one of those people who are wondering why you should visit the city, here are just 5 reasons why you should do so.
Food
Mexican food is one of my absolute favourite types of food and Mexico City is one of the best places that I have tried this delicious, home-cooked Mesoamerican cuisine. The city is filled with stalls which sell local food that is cooked on the street, piping hot and absolutely delicious. If you can, try to look out for a tianguis, this is a collection of stalls which are usually adorned with a red and white striped canopy, here you will fid a wide range of beautiful Mexican food.
Culture
The culture of Mexico City is the perfect blend between old and new, on the one hand the city is forward thinking and progressive whilst on the other it respects the traditions of the country and you can find evidence of this throughout the city.
History
This city has its roots in the very early settlers in Mexico and you can find ruins, ancient buildings and museums such as the anthropology museum which have many displays of artefacts that date back to the city’s origins. Around an hour outside of the city you will find the ancient city of Teotihuacan which is perfectly preserved and features no less than two pyramids.
People
My experience of Mexico City was that the people here are incredibly welcoming to tourists and foreigners. Whether you are in a restaurant, a shop or a market, there seems to always be someone on hand who is willing to help you out. There is not a great deal of English spoken here by the older community and if you don’t have great Spanish, you will need to use hands and kind gestures to get by, thankfully however, despite the lack of English, the people are more than happy to go above and beyond to help you out.
Price
Mexico City is one of the cheapest cities on Earth and your dollar can really travel far here. Food, rent, getting around and going out are all very low priced and if you are looking for somewhere to have an amazing experience, without spending big bucks, then Mexico City is most definitely the city for you to choose for your next vacation.
