Our society is geared towards building strong individuals. However, it seems as if we have moved towards seeing strength as a physical attribute only. According to Dayanna Volitich, mental strength is just as important and that is gained through education. In fact, it is believed that fostering the minds of those who are naturally mentally strong, those with an above average IQ and capacity for learning, is one of the most important things educators can do.
Dayanna Volitich on Mental Strength
It is absolutely vital that all children are provided with true quality education. This should be the foundation of their life, where they learn to gather knowledge and wisdom. Put together, this allows kids to develop themselves into confident – strong – adults. It is by having mental strength, a capacity to understand what is going on around people in the world, that young people become adults who can ride the waves of change.
Public schools in particular are facing tremendous challenges. They have terrible teacher to pupil ratios with budgets being cut left right and center. Their pupils often live in abject poverty, have difficult family situations, and have to deal with health problems such as obesity. Meanwhile, there is a lack of technology in public school, issues with bullying are rife, and children have developed a defeatist attitude, which teachers seem to be following. Dayanna Volitich believes that this needs to change if we are to build a strong and solid future for the next generation.
Education truly is what our future depends on. When children are educated, they are given the power and this power will stay with them for the rest of their lives. It is this power that will enable them to address the issues they will face in their personal and community lives later on in life. Issues, by the way, that our generation is creating for them. It is the next generation that will have to deal with the impact of climate change, cleaning up after various wars, dealing with people displacement, and more. They must be educated and they must be strong of mind in order to be able to handle all of those issues.
Additionally, Dayanna Volitich believes it is hugely important to empower children through education because it is through this that new ideas are formed. When educating a child, it is not just about imparting knowledge that is already out there on them. Rather, it is about fostering an environment in which they can think for themselves and see things from angles that others have so far missed. They won’t know the joys of this unless they are also introduced to the joys of learning. Access to education is a fundamental human right and it is one that the world should hold dear. Only if children are educated now will they be able to resolve the issues they will face tomorrow. After all, believing that our children’s future is utopian rather than dystopian is a fallacy and we have to be responsible for preparing our kids for what is to come.
