Choosing the Right Hot Water Heater for Your Home

Choosing the Right Hot Water Heater for Your Home

Are you building a new home and need to choose a hot water heater? Maybe you are replacing your old unit and want to find one that is more energy efficient? Choosing the right water heater for your home can be a difficult process if you don’t know where to start. That’s why today we are going to explore your options so you can find a unit that fits your needs.

Gas or Electric?

When choosing a hot water heater, the first decision you will need to make is whether you need a propane fired water heater or one the runs completely on electric. When it comes to price, electric heaters are often much cheaper to purchase. So, if you are on a budget, this just might be the right option for you. But keep in mind that electric water heaters will cost more to run over time compared to those that run on natural gas. If you are looking to save money long term, this might be the way to go. Each type of water heater has its pros and cons, but overall, the choice is really up to the homeowner.

Traditional Tanked Water Heaters

Traditional tanked water heaters have been around for many decades and are used in most homes. These units vary in size and contain many gallons of water. So, the size of your hot water needs will ultimately determine which size unit you will purchase. This process is called sizing. If you live in a smaller home and live alone, then you can probably get by with using a smaller and cheaper unit. But if you have a large home with more than a few family members, then a more expensive and larger unit will be needed to keep up with demand. Keep in mind that large tanked heaters will take up a lot more space than smaller units. Make sure to measure that area that your new hot water heater will be installed in before you make a purchase.

Tankless Water Heaters

Tankless water heaters are newer units that many people are choosing to install in their homes. Because they don’t take up a lot of space, these on demand water heaters can be placed just about anywhere. These units heat water very quickly giving you an endless supply of hot water. You won’t have to worry about running out of hot water while in the shower ever again! These water heaters are great for large families and are more energy efficient than tanked heaters. But they often cost more than traditional water heaters and can even set you back as much as a thousand dollars. Keep this in mind when searching for a water heater for your home.

These tips will help you determine the right water heater for your situation. Remember that you will have to choose from either a gas fired unit or one that runs on electric. Each has its own benefits, but one may be more suited for your needs.
