What do you think about the cover?
I absolutely love it. The designer is Sammy Yuen, who is (in my totally unbiased opinion) completely brilliant. He designed the Incarceron and Sapphique covers, which were purchases I made spur of the moment in a bookstore SOLELY based on their amazing covers, making him one of the very few cover designers I actually recognize instantly by name. So I’ve been basically dancing nonstop since I found out he was designing my cover.
Lark is not one of those gorgeous, ballgown-wearing heroines–she spends much of the book dirty, sunburned, sleep-deprived, on the verge of starvation, running for her life. There’s just no way to put her on the cover looking glamorous. I’m so glad that the cover instead is about the feel of the book… magical, dark, tangled. And of course, the iron filigree at the corners hearkens back to the book’s original title, and Lark’s end goal, to reach safety in the Iron Wood. I’m just in love with the colors and textures.
Did you have any input on the final cover?
I got to see this cover every step of the way from when it was just a photograph image of a misty forest. I was all prepared to fight for awesomeness, but when it came down to it, I loved everything so much that I had no complaints! At one point the title was a bit hard to read, and that got changed, but other than that, the cover design seemed (from my perspective, anyway) to be extremely smooth sailing.
Is there anything you can share about Skylark that isn’t included in the synopsis?
Be ready for anything. Words I keep seeing in people’s reviews and reactions are unexpected, shocking, unique, etc. I love books that take you to places you didn’t expect to go, and that’s why I tried to do with Skylark. While on the surface Lark’s journey is a physical one from the place where she was born to the place she hopes she’ll belong, there’s a lot that changes along the way. It goes from a story of simple survival to something much darker.
