Sure, coping with a bipolar mother on meth is no picnic, but beneath the sun-dazzled canopies of Hickory and Walnut, Carey’s violin transports her from their bare-bones existence in the same way her little sister, Jenessa, finds comfort in her stash of second-hand Pooh books.

Life is dependable that way, until Mama goes into town for supplies and vanishes off the face of Tennessee, sending social services in her wake with a one-way ticket back to their father – a stranger in an even stranger world.

My First Author Signing! by Christina

Around 5:00, we went to our vehicles to get our books.  When we came back in, we sat in the meet and greet room and talked for about 20 minutes.  The authors came in and Kristi gave them little goody bags.   I began to ask them the questions I had written out.  Earlier that week my mom had painted “Fierce Read” on my nails and I was so nervous when they took the picture of them, my hands were shaking. ☺  I got through the questions just in time because after that they were going to go to the signing.

They headed out for the signing and before the actual signing they showed the book trailers, which of course I had already seen.  I’d probably get in a lot trouble for saying and doing this, but I watched the book trailer for Struck by Jennifer Bosworth before I read the book, so…I sort of spoiled the book for myself.  The trailers were fabulously made.  After each trailer, the authors would say what inspired them to write their books.  They also told what the books were about for those of the fans who hadn’t read them yet.  Then they had some of the audience members asked them questions and I swear I tell everyone I come across about this, but someone asked about their writers block, and well, Anna Banks, being as funny as she is, said “I don’t think of it as ‘writer’s block’.  I like to think of it as writer’s constipation because, when you’re writing, a little comes out but its crap.   It’s like smearing crap all over your work.”   That had everyone cracking up laughing.

I got in line and had all my books signed.  Jennifer Bosworth did a tarot reading because she didn’t have any swag and I got the leader card, I can’t remember the name of it, but she said I was going to be a leader.  I got a signed book mark by Anna Banks as well, plus a poster.  I felt really bad for Anna Banks because the airport had lost her luggage.  I had my books signed and I also got a poster signed.  It had to of been the best day of my ENTIRE life!!!  No joke.  It was the first time I had met an author, not to mention authorS.  I had a great time and the authors were SUPER friendly and I hope to get to meet up with them in the future. ☺

Publisher: Little, Brown BFYR
Release Date: October 23, 2012

Astrid Jones copes with her small town’s gossip and narrow-mindedness by staring at the sky and imagining that she’s sending love to the passengers in the airplanes flying high over her backyard. Maybe they’ll know what to do with it. Maybe it’ll make them happy. Maybe they’ll need it. Her mother doesn’t want it, her father’s always stoned, her perfect sister’s too busy trying to fit in, and the people in her small town would never allow her to love the person she really wants to: another girl named Dee. There’s no one Astrid feels she can talk to about this deep secret or the profound questions that she’s trying to answer. But little does she know just how much sending her love–and asking the right questions–will affect the passengers’ lives, and her own, for the better.

In this unmistakably original portrayal of a girl struggling to break free of society’s boxes and definitions, Printz Honor author A.S. King asks readers to question everything–and offers hope to those who will never stop seeking and sharing real love.
