Love ties them together. Death can't tear them apart.

Best. Birthday. Ever. At least, it was supposed to be. With Logan's band playing a critical gig and Aura's plans for an intimate after-party, Aura knows it will be the most memorable night of her boyfriend's life. She never thought it would be his last.

Logan's sudden death leaves Aura devastated. He's gone.

Well, sort of.

Like everyone born after the Shift, Aura can see and hear ghosts. This mysterious ability has always been annoying, and Aura had wanted nothing more than to figure out why the Shift happened so she can undo it. But not with Logan's violet-hued spirit still hanging around. Because dead Logan is almost as real as ever. Almost.

It doesn't help that Aura's new friend Zachary is so understanding--and so very alive. His support means more to Aura than she cares to admit.

As Aura's relationships with the dead and the living grow ever complicated, so do her feelings for Logan and Zachary. Each holds a piece of Aura's heart...and clues to the secret of the Shift.

(summary from Amazon.com

Shade is one hauntingly awesome debut that will leave you craving the sequel as soon as the last page is read.

I don't really know what to say... I mean it was fabulous, it was one of those 'wow' reads. Where you don't see the last page coming because you just want it to keep on going... where you read the last sentence and immediately need the next novel... 'wow'

I really think Shade, as a paranormal novel, is going to stand out among the throngs of vampire, werewolf, and angel books. Although this isn't the first novel I've read about ghosts, the story is incredibly unique and well done. Plus it has that whole incredibly hot love triangle going on, which is something that I can't get enough of for some reason. And for once I don't have a definite side that I'm on.

Aura is a really well developed character and as a reader you can't help but get caught up in the emotional battle that she struggles with throughout this novel. Aura's character has a very compelling and relatable voice, and I think readers will automatically like her. I know I did. And the boys in this novel, wow. Hot guitar playing rock-star...er ghost, or a seriously sexy Scotsman....?

The whole mystery surrounding 'the shift' isn't really divulged upon in this novel. No one really knows what caused it, and the people that are trying to find an answer really only have assumptions. But don't think that Smith-Ready leaves you empty handed, there are a few big revelations that will keep you more than satisfied!

That cliffhanger ending totally KILLED me!

Jeri Smith-Ready has made a fan out of me.

It's already at the bookstore near me (they put out all books like 2 weeks in advance it seems) and it looked so good but I got another book instead (Hex Hall). So now I'm going to go get this one too.... your review is great!

I just ordered this one from Amazon, so I'm so happy to hear you loved it. I didn't know it was going to be part of a series. I'm sure I'll also be anxiously waiting for the sequel as soon as I finish it. I can't wait to read Shade!

Oh, wow!
From the numerous reviews I've come across (for SHADE), ALL reviewers have given this five stars. Excluding very few exceptional novels, I don't think I've seen that before.
I am so excited for May 4!
Thanks for the awesome review, Kristi. :)
Love, Hannah

Ooh I remember seeing this on Goodreads, but the blurb there does nothing for the book- I skipped past it almost right away. Your review has made me rush on over to the bookdepository right away though! I can't wait for it now =)

It IS really good. I don't read YA (full-blown horror/non-fic fan here) but I really enjoyed this one. Took it out of the book, killed it in a day. Excellent work. Look forward to the rest of the series.

Thanks for the great review, this book sounds excellent. I just finished another one you might enjoy called, "The Ovary Wars," which is a medical mystery thriller by Mike Hogan. It was a very intriguing, thought provoking read that kept my interest all the way to the end.

I really love debut novels. This one sounds interesting. I was remarking on Kris' blog that it seems as though the YA genre has turned largely toward paranormal. I'm wondering now whether this happened before or after the Twilight phenomenon.

Some sound interesting, while others just seem to be over-done stories. This definitely seems like it might be different, and therefore worth the read! Thanks!

I am confused by the ending. Logan only returns as a ghost right? the author wording makes in sound like he actually came back to life. someone please clear this up for me! thanks
