Book Angel: Holiday Charity Contest

Tuesday, December 1, 2009

Yesterday I posted about a Book Angel named Michelle, and her personal mission to bring the joy of reading to a community in need. Well, the masterminds of generosity (Vania and Kami) wanted to surprise Michelle and her cause.

I was so thrilled to see people wanting to help out in the comments section on yesterdays post! Look at you being all compassionate and wanting to help out before we even bribed you!

You can help out! And here's how!
  • Donate some books... at least 3-5 books would be fantastic!
  • send them to Michelle (address at the end of the post)
  • send the books by the January 1, 2010 deadline
  • add a little note, with your books sent. Include: your name, address, email, and blog if you have one.
And as an extra incentive, besides feeling better about yourself, you'll be in the running for some fantastic prizes!

UPDATE: YES! ARCs ARE GOOD TOO!!

Here's what up for grabs. These are all individual prize packs. (Be sure to include your info with your books, otherwise it will be impossible to claim a prize!)
  • A UK and US signed copies of  Demon's Lexicon by Sarah Rees Brennan
  • A signed ARC of Sea by Heidi R. Kling

The books are for children ranging in ages from 1 to 18. They do not have to be brand new, gently used books are welcome.

You can send the books to Michelle at the following address:

Michelle Wright

Thanks to Kami & Margie and the many authors who have donated for this cause! You are a HUGE help! And I am sure Michelle and the kids will appreciate everything you've done!

That's awesome so many want to help!

Our church just gathered thousands of books and $4500 for our pastor's son's middle school in Philly, and when he saw it all on Sunday, he nearly cried.

Reading is the greatest gift one can give a child!

BEAUTIFUL - what amazing people there are in this world - I am excited, I want to try to help - though it will not be nearly as much as some - hopefully it will help!

Hiya just wanted to stop by and say that Becca Fitzpatrick, author of Hush, Hush has been supporting Michelle (you can read about her urge readers to donate at http://www.livingyourfive.com/). I've donated three books to the initiative over the past couple of months, because it's a fantastic idea and I admire anyone who can put their money where there mouth is. It's great to see a blog with such a big readership getting behind this project and I enjoyed seeing pictures of the kid choosing books.

It's alright if some of the books are arcs right? =)

As St. Francis of Assisi said, "It is in giving that we receive," I don't think he meant it quite so literally, but I'm game! I have a few books in mind.
Thanks for posting about this, Kristi! This really makes it feel like the holidays. =)

Kudos to Michelle for making the effort!

What a great project! I've participated in a couple of other book drives, and one thing that's really cool is if the organization makes an Amazon/other site wishlist of books that kids have requested/liked. That way people can just buy from the site and have them shipped right to the library!

Yay! I'm going to post about this over at my blog too! Thank you so so much for hosting this! I hope she gets tons of books!

P.S. Are sending ARCs acceptable?

This is great! I may only be able to send 1 or 2 because of the cost (I live in the UK) but I'll try and post as many as I can!
Thanks for this great post

What a great cause! I'm in the UK, but I think I'll ask my mom to gather up all my old books (if I saved them, it meant I liked them!) so she can ship them out before Christmas!

I've had plans to send books to Michelle since Kami first posted about her project. I was waiting for Christmas break from school so that I can get them boxed and mailed without such a rush. The contest is an added bonus. Thanks for getting the word out about this!

This is such an awesome idea! I've spread the word around my work a bit, and a few people I work with are brining in books along with the ones I'm going to send :)
