Today I have the privileged of being a part of a blog tour with a fantastic author, E. Lockhart! As part of this tour we’re celebrating E. Lockhart’s Ruby Oliver series, which currently consists of three titles:
A fourth title in the series: Real Life Boyfriends will be released December 2010! You can sign up to win the current set of three Ruby Oliver Books at the end of the post!
I’ve also been given the chance to unveil one of the new covers for the series along with three other blog tour hosts! Check out the new cover for The Boy Book!
Do you have any “must haves” with you while you’re writing?
A block of time at least two hours. Delicious beverages. Other than that, pretty much not. I just force myself. To many “musts” and I wouldn’t write.
Describe your writing in three words.
Wordy feminist comedies.
Do you have a specific time or place that you write?
Right now I write in a fairly crappy coffee shop that lets me sit all day. I used to write in a great coffee shop with writers Maureen Johnson, Scott Westerfeld, John Green and some others — but then my schedule changed and I haven’t had their company in ages. Sometimes I write at Libba Bray’s house. The YA writing community is amazingly supportive and friendly. However: I just bought an apartment in which I will have a beautiful office with a view, though. I am so so so excited to have my own place to work.
What’s the most interesting comment you have received about your books?
Back when I read my Amazon reviews (years ago) someone called me a pornographer. Because Fly on the Wall is a bit racy. But hello? Lust is a huge part of the teenage experience, and I think we need to write about it sometimes if we are to be true to expressing what if feels like to be a young adult. I think that book looks at lust very analytically, actually. Which makes it very far from pornographic.
What’s the most challenging aspect of writing? Easiest?
Is never easy. It uses my entire entire brain.
Is there a genre that you’d like to write? Is there a genre you’ll probably stay away from and why?
I’d like to be able to write a thriller or a big sprawling historical book. But my brain doesn’t work that way. Everything comes out kinda funny and plot is agonizing.
What’s next for you?
The fourth book in the Ruby Oliver series, Real Live Boyfriends, comes out December 2010. First three books are: The Boyfriend List, The Boy Book, and The Treasure Map of Boys. After that: I don’t know. I have ideas but they haven’t gelled yet.
December 7: Bildungsroman (unveiling the The Boyfriend List’s new cover!)
December 8: The Story Siren (ME!)
December 9: The Page Flipper (unveiling The Treasure Map of Boys’ new cover!)
December 10: Cheryl Rainfield (unveiling the cover for Real Live Boyfriends!)
December 11: Sharon Loves Books and Cats
December 12: Park Avenue Princess

These sound cute – and now I desperately need to read them to know why she was called a pornographer. . .

Great interview! I think some people are just crazy (about the pornographer comment). Similarly, I read an Amazon review for the Dear Dumb Diary series that said it should be R rated because it had the word "turd" in it. Seriously, what 9 year old hasn't said turd? lol

I've honestly never picked up these books because of the covers (horrible, I know). But "Wordy feminist comedies" sound right up my alley! Thanks for the great interview and the giveaway!
