There’s something achingly familiar about Daniel Grigori.Mysterious and aloof, he captures Luce Price’s attention from the moment she sees him on her first day at the Sword & Cross boarding school in sultry Savannah, Georgia. He’s the one bright spot in a place where cell phones are forbidden, the other students are all screw-ups, and security cameras watch every move.
Even though Daniel wants nothing to do with Luce–and goes out of his way to make that very clear–she can’t let it go. Drawn to him like a moth to a flame, she has to find out what Daniel is so desperate to keep secret . . . even if it kills her.
Dangerously exciting and darkly romantic, Fallen is a page turning thriller and the ultimate love story.
Three words; dangerous, dark & exciting!
Let me first start out by saying that I’m so perturbed by some of the summaries that I’ve found for this book! Why don’t we just tell the whole frackin’ story! No need to read the book…. just read this summary, let us ruin it for you! GRRR! I hate when they give away plot elements! I found this summary on Random House and I have to say, it’s the best one! (I edited the one on Goodreads to this!) It’s intriguing enough, but doesn’t give away the whole story. Rant, done. On with the review.
This book was fantastic. I loved it. If this series is anything like what I am anticipating after reading the first novel, it’s going to be epic.
It has all the elements of a great novel, there were just a few unsettling factors that I won’t mention as to keep this spoiler free. But overall, I’m impressed!
The characterization is spectacular. Kate divulges enough about each character, allowing a sense of recognition, yet at the same time, you’re questioning their very actions, wondering exactly who or what they are. Three dimensional characters, shrouded in mystery! I’m hoping that Luce regains some of her assertiveness as the series continues.
The writing was impressive. The drab descriptions of Sword and Cross transport you there along with the characters. Her descriptive writing is intense without being superfluous.
The plot was a little slow moving, but Kate was still able to keep me thoroughly engaged in the story. I had so many questions that I needed answered, and the pages couldn’t be turned fast enough. And although a lot of my questions remained unanswered, it only added to the appeal of the story. There needed to be some remaining mystery. Twists that I hadn’t anticipated in the least enhanced the plot as well.
Just an awesome story, I’m really looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

Awesome review, Kristi! I loved Fallen, it was soo good! I'll link to your review from mine
I was very disappointed in the lack of information in this one. As a first in a series, it is to be expected to have some remaining mystery to carry over to the next, but I didn't feel I learned much of anything from this one. There was plenty to guess at, but not much in the way of solid resolution. It felt more like a novel-length prologue.
The heroine also, unfortunately, was frustrating for me. Given she's in the dark for most of the book, it's understandable, but I still wish she'd been more proactive.
I do agree on the writing itself. And the author builds up the general air of gloom, doom, etc. quite nicely.
I really don't feel like starting another series right now, so I am waiting to see how many raves (or not) this one gets.
I adore the cover to this book. IT is on my wish list. Great review.

I just got my review copy last week and will just have to squeeze it in sooner than later. I've been reading fantastic reviews of it so far. Lovely review as always.

I'm reading another book by Lauren Kate and it's been okay so far. Looking forwarding to reading this one.
This sounds really good- will have to keep my eye out for it, though hopefully Random House will just surprise me with a hardcover review copy next month, lol. I have Lauren's other book and it looks good as well. Great review!!
You hit the nail on the head, I said about the same in my review. The pace does go a little slow, but the ending is worth it!
The summary makes this sound like Evernight by Claudia Grey… is it just me? I can't recall if you read Evernight or not, I think you did?
I am tired of books being so similar it's hard to tell them apart. But if you assure me that this is NOTHING like Evernight, I'll believe you. Or, I'll just chop off all your hair while you sleep. Muahahahahahah!

I agree with what you said about book summaries, sometimes, they do give far too much away. I can't wait to read this one, it sounds amazing!

From the title alone this tells me what the book is about. Perhaps much like Hush Hush?
I have Fallen in my TBR.
I've heard a few super-negative things about this one, but I wasn't sure. Thanks for the awesome review. Fallen will definitely be on my to-buy list this December!
I have this one to review too – I'm glad you liked it, makes me want to read it more. Have a few to go before I get to this one though. Thanks for the review!

I also know what you mean about giving away too much in a synopsis, I hate that too…grrr.

awesome review – i agree, i loved this book!!! i seriously couldn't wait for the book to come out, and now i can't wait for the sequel (september??!! REALLY?!)
lots of people said that hush hush is better, but they're 2 completely different stories (besides the angel part), especially since fallen is going to be a 4 book series.
alot of the reviews i read kept on saying that they didn't like it coz so many questions were left unanswered. well DUH – its going to be a SERIES, so not everything can be revealed, and the characters will probably develop over the series.
not sure about the movie. if its not done right, it could ruin the series like it did with twilight

I loved this book! I really hope Lauren Kate lets Disney make this into a movie (even though I can imagine a few other companies that would do a better job lol). I was very impressed with her writing and really cannot wait for the sequel ~ PLUS the covers are AMAZING (and usually I tend to judge books by their covers more than I like to admit)

This was a good one…but I agree with you that it was slow at times.
