The Dark Side (of blogging)

Sunday, August 9, 2009
It's has came to my attention that there has been a lot of negativity going around the blogging community. Negativity towards bloggers, from other bloggers, and from anon. commentors. This isn't the first time it has happened and I'm sure it won't be the last. Our blogs our public domains, so it's bound to happen occasionally. But I had my share of personal attacks yesterday, and I wanted to shed a little light on the situation.

Yesterday morning I received, what I would call a hate mail (please note that in any other circumstances I would not post a personal email. With that being said, I believe this was sent under a false name and email account. When I tried to respond by email I received a delivery failure notice):

Dear Kristi,

We newbie bloggers have something to say. And believe me when we say it is long overdue. We aren't writing this email to be mean but we want you to know a few things. be sure to read this.

we are tired of you getting so many books. when you know you can't possibly read them all. you are greedy. Save some for the rest of us. You don't have to have every book that comes out. Go to the library. You have a job. But your own books.

Aren't you too old to read teen books. They are aimed at young people. You old bloggers need to give up and let the real teen voices be heard. How can you have the same views as a teen when you are not one. And your reviews could use some work to. They are a little short don't you think. Like we said let the real teens have a chance.

We are sick of you acting like you are better than everyone else. You think you have the best blog in the world. News Flash, YOU DON'T. Its only a matter of time before someone comes along and knocks you off your throne and I hope we are all there to see it. You are such a fake person. I don't know why people even like you. I hope you get what you deserve. It's called karma.

Just so you know there are a group of us that are not following you on twitter or your stupid blog anymore. Please do us a favor and stop blogging.

Sincerely,
Lena
I'm not sure who Lena is, and honestly it doesn't matter. This email was meant to be a mean email, it was meant to attack me personally. There are proper and improper ways to contact a blogger when you have a problem with them. This is an example of what NOT to do. Had the composer used a more professional tone, and refrained from name calling, perhaps I would have taken them more seriously. Like I said, there is a wrong and a right way of doing this.

In my defense (since the email account that this was sent from seems to miraculously be closed, and even more so it's ridiculous I'm even defending myself, but so be it) I do receive a lot of books for review, yes I do. I'm not denying it. I try and do read almost 95% off all the books I receive for review, it may take me a few months or more, but most of them do get read. Also I rarely ask for books. It's been months since I've sent a request. Most of the time, authors and pubs contact me directly asking for a review. And no, I do not accept every request. And I DO "buy" a lot of books.

You're never to old or young to read what you want. I also watch children's movies too! The scandal! I may not be a teen now, but I was a teen once upon a time. I still think my opinions are my own regardless of my age.

If I act like I'm better than everyone else, I apologize for that. That wasn't the way I was raised, and I never meant to insinuate that. I honestly don't think I have the best blog ever, far from it actually. We are always most critical or ourselves and I am no exception to the rule. I still wonder why I have a following on my blog. And you have every right to decide who you would like to follow, it my blog isn't something you like, please feel free to stop. I hope you find something that you do enjoy.

My second bout of the dark side came from a series of comments that were left on a two star review that I did recently.

Let me start out by saying this: My opinions and rating of a book are based on how much I enjoy reading the book. Period. It's my right to express MY opinion truthfully and honestly. I will not apologize for not liking a book. I stand by decision to write a negative review and will continue to do it as the occasion arises. There are blogs that only post reviews for books that have favorable ratings. I am not one of them. If that is not something you'd like to see, please feel free to stop viewing my blog.

This particular commentor was very rude and childish. There was a lot of profanity in the comments and mostly contained personal attacks on myself, and no actual substance toward the review itself. Of course as in most instances this commenter decided to stay anonymous. Initially I left the comment. But as the night wore on, anon decided to come back and make personal attacks on some of the other commentors, that I WILL NOT tolerate. A personal attack on me is one thing, but I will not stand there and let someone attack my blog readers.

Luckily, I have an awesome support system of fellow bloggers and authors who are sure to remind me of the type of person I really am.

The moral of this story. Shit happens.

It's up to you as the blogger to decide how to deal with these instances because if you continue to blog, it's bound to happen. Don't let it stop you. Don't let it get you down. I recommend ignoring the commentor. Most of the time there is nothing you can do in their eyes to rectify the situation, you're already the bad person. I know it's hard to ignore things like this. Yes, even I have a hard time ignoring it, there was a recent situation where I was being slandered about on Twitter, it was harsh to say the least, and I acted impulsively, when I shouldn't have. Yes, I only defended myself, but sometimes it's better to leave it alone.

It's up to you to decide whether or not to leave the comments. I almost always end up deleting them because of personal attacks. You don't want to censor your comments, but there are certain things that step out of bounds, don't be afraid to hit that delete button.

Don't cross over to the dark side.

Obviously if she has a problem with YOU reading YA, she has a problem with all the authors older than you reading it too. I'd love to see her take her problem up with them too. :D

Kristi, as a librarian and a blogger, I LOVE your reviews and find what you have to say so useful for my purchasing and reading decisions. You've earned credit in your work, unlike new bloggers who haven't put in the time or energy that you have.

It's just too bad that some feel they deserve something when they haven't worked for it, yaknow? :)

Making abusive comments and sending hate mail is totally unacceptable. I hope that you are able to ignore these hurtful comments and continue blogging in an honest way.

I admire the way you have handled this incident.

Love this post. Very professional, and I'm glad you don't let it get to you. You have to let it bounce off because jealousy is a horrible trait to have.

Also, is it wrong for young adults/teens to review ADULT books too? :P Should we all just stick to our age groups. Should I not read/review Vampire books because I'm not a vampire, and can't give a true opinion on them? :P

Great post Kristi.
We all know you get the books you get because you've worked hard to get your blog to the place it's at now. And if adults don't read books, how do we have librarians that specialize in the teen section? Or authors that write them? I'm pretty sure most authors are adults.

Good job handling this - hopefully it'll make some other bloggers aware.
Michelle said...
I find it interesting that her "argument" resides solely around the fact that you get free books that in return the rest of them are presumably losing out on as a result. That whole "your reviews are too short" was just thrown in for show it seems.

I have to say I enjoy your blog immensely and I could care less about how you get your books, how many you have or the time you take from receipt to review. Perhaps others should concentrate more on perfecting their blogs....then they might see an increase in the attention they feel they so richly deserve.

Kristi,
I love this post! I think it's stupid that people are so critical, but I believe you handle thing very nicely. We know why some people get books and you have worked really hard to get where you are with your blogger.
And I liked what Brooke said. If only vampires should review vampire works, please send me in the direction of the nearest vampire please!

You shouldn't have to deal with that kind of childish behavior. The commentor was jealous of the fact that so many people follow you and your blog, and that you receive a lot of books. I commend you for standing up for yourself and your followers. Not many people would stand up for others. That's why I follow your blog; you're not afraid to give your opinion and you're real. And you right great reviews that I take into account when I buy a book. Your blog is one of my favorites and if they can't see why, then they should keep their rude comments to themselves. Just know that you have a ton of loyal followers that are willing to stand up for you too. Thanks for everything!

I can't believe that you received this email after the horrible comments on your review a few days ago. I know if it was me I would be feeling a little down about it. You just have to take heart from the fact that your blog is one of the most successful out there and this counts for a lot. You have a lot of followers and people come back to you day after day.

The reason that these people are so mean is because they are so jealous. It's absolutely ridiculous and I honestly can't believe that there are people like that out there that would personally attack another 'cos they get more books, how childish. I'm so sorry that you are getting this kind of feedback but I would honestly just ignore it.

I don't think anyone is too old to read any kind of book and for the girl Lena to say so shows that she is very narrow minded. Also, her letter was full of spelling an gammer mistakes so she really needs to take a look at her writing rather than criticising others.

I know I have gone on a bit, so sorry about that, but this girl just p****d me off.

I am a newbie and this is not how I feel at all!!!

Keep the faith :) x

Very wonderful post. You got to the heart of matter that needed to be discussed. Since we are all part of a community, there is bound to be some jealously. However, it should not be taken out in the manner that Lena decided to.

At the end of the day, you know that you have worked for what you have gotten and that is all that matters. I understand that it is hard to be new and want what other have. But they have to realize that it takes time for authors/publishers to take you seriously as a blogger. Plus we are not(or should not) be here for the books. Shame on her.

Thank you for being the better person and dealing with it in such a professional manner. Many, many kudos to you.

I am shocked at the behavior of some people. To personally attack a blogger (regardless of whom he/she is) is totally unacceptable.

Kristi, you are one of the most humble, down to earth bloggers I have encountered. I think that your reviews are well written and your following proves that your blog is enjoyed by many.

I am so glad that you do are not affected by comments by anonymous posters and emails by people who are too afraid to reveal their true identities.

Thank you for bringing this to light and for doing so in a professional manner. The blogging community is stronger because of wonderful bloggers like you.

I like: Moral of the story. Shit happens.

Great post- I think its ridiculous about the entire post, ummm looking at reviews some people give 1 star to books others have given 5s. It's all called opinion for a reason. I can't see politely saying in response to a book review you liked and someone else, saying I liked it - these points were great or something like that, but don't email or leave anon. comments. Really grow up.

Though I guess we all should you know rebel agaisnt Kristi since she DID ask us to worship her as she sat on a thrown (:P lol. jk.)

As a new blogger myself, I have to say that I do not share Lena's opinions.
Before I set up my blog, I did my research on book blogging. After looking at yours and several other blogs, I know that you have to pay your dues. You can't start a blog and expect publishers to throw themselves at you! You have to gain a following, network, and keep up with your reviews. After blogging for a little over a month now, I know I have quite a long way to go.
That being said, I'd like to thank you for being an inspiration to me and other new bloggers out there!

Its like a witch hunt lately!

Hmmm...I guess this old blogger should stop accepting YA books too so real teens can get them.

@Lenore--or alternately maybe we shouldn't let Teens read at all? We can segregate them away from us 'old bloggers' and give them their own little community!
Jaime said...
WTF?? Is there a crazy moon out or something? What's with all the hating on other bloggers? Apparently a newbie blogger received hateful comments on her blog because she was given an AWESOME opportunity to review a bookshelf!

Ok, so if "Lena" wants the opportunity to review tons of books, then she needs to hop up and kick up her game.

I am a new blogger and I have worked VERY VERY hard to gain readership, the books that get sent to me and to maintain the "Friendships" I have built. I am happy that other bloggers receive such AWESOME opportunities. It's not greedy. I have a hard time saying no to book requests.

Glad you shared this, because although 98% of book bloggers are totally kickass, warm, awesome people there is still the 2% that pisses me off. You choose to read and review YA books and THAT is YOUR prerogative. You have an excellent blog that you have worked hard at and have built a good, solid reputation.

Lena.. if you are still stalking The Story Siren... GROW THE FCUK UP and be an adult. Oh wait..are you an adult? Obviously not based on the email you sent. If you were a good solid reviewer, you wouldn't need to attack another book blogger.

Sorry you have had to deal with this. Some people are very immature. I hope they realize that jealousy will not get them anywhere. They have to learn how to do it the long way and network network network to be able to get interest from publishers and authors. I read young adult books and I am no where near being a teenager but I can reflect on what it was like for me to be a teenager.

Again I am sorry you had deal with this and by the way I love your blog : )

Kristi, you're the reason I started book blogging. (That, and cos I wanted to yap about books.)

Personally for me, getting ARCs is a privilege. My main purpose is still blogging about books that I want to, and those books usually come from libraries. If an author or publisher likes and trusts my reviews, well again, that's a privilege.

As a relatively new blogger, I don't think you act snobbish or you hog all the ARCs. In fact, you've been so helpful in so many ways, and I can't thank you enough for that.
bookmagic said...
Yikes, people can be mean. I'm a new blogger and I don't hate or dislike anyone's blog. If I did, I would just not read it, not write hateful emails. Don't people know that jealousy will eat away at you?
I hadn't seen your blog before this, but now that I've found it, I'm going to follow it. Take that haters!!

Kristi, you're a wonderful friend of mine and I am extremely angry at this girl for sending you that kind of email. Don't let this sort of thing get you down at all- you've got tons of support and very few naysayers.

Like I said on Twitter, if she thinks you get all the review books, what does she think of me? lol. Because I feel like I get way more than you for review; I've seen your vlogs and IMM posts and you show off a lot of books you bought. I barely buy any (though of course I am jobless right now, so that's a big reason, lol). I guess we adults just have to hog all the ARCs cuz yknow there's only like 5 in existance.

Anyway, very professional response- definitely more professional than I would've been, lol. I probably would've been cussing her out and using lots of bad words.

But know you've got tons of friends and we're always here for you. If you need to talk about anything, feel free to shoot me an email. *hugs for you!*
Kelsey said...
That's a horrible thing to say. I can't believe anyone would go to those extremes. It's most likely jealousy talking. I'm a new blogger, myself, and I started it after following a few teen book review blogs, including yours, and thought it would be fun to share my thoughts on teen books. I don't want you to think that she was speaking for all new bloggers, because I definitely don't feel that way.

Keep up the good work!

Kristi,
An awesome post! Yes, shit happens. LOL! I have not been in the blogging community for long, but lately there seems to be a lot of "hate" going around. It is sad to see, but I am not going to let it's malicious intent disuade me from enjoying my blog.

I recently had a post from an ANON and I would have taken things seriously if they just "manned" up and posted using their identity. When someone does not even have the courage to insult you and stay around for the rebuttle...then hey, they are showing you just what kind of a weasle they truly are.

I was truly disturbed by the fact that someone would believe that since your not a teenager that you should not be allowed to recieve YA books let alone read them. Isn't this a free country...when did it ever become a rule that once you passed your teens that you could no longer enjoy teen activities??? I see the looks people give me when I linger in the YA section or when I purchase YA books. I have even been approached and asked why I read YA. I always have to stop the first response that comes to my mind and simply say "Because I like it and it makes me happy"

I guess that it a bit of the Nerdfighter within me. It seems to work in this instance...increasing the awesome and decreasing the suck!!

So, Kristi keep up the great work. I truly enjoy your blog and as you see, so many others feel the same way. You may have a "hater" from time to time, but don't let it ever disuade you from posting.

I dont understand what that girls problem is! You are an amazing blogger and have inspired me to continue with my blog when I thought that it would go nowhere. I think that she is obviously jealous and is blogging for the wrong reasons. If she is complaining that she cant get ARC's from authors than it seems to me that is the only reason she is doing it is to get the books not the enjoyment of reading. Why doesn't she take her own advice and go to the library, or buy some books. I think this is pretty ridiculous. I am glad you made this posted it really shows everyone how some people can be.

I'm glad you decided to post this, because lately I've seen a few comments like the anon that you received around some YA Blogs. Plus, as a fairly new book blogger, I would like to say that I can't believe the email you got. Someone was complaining that they didn't get enough arcs because you get them all? Really?! Assuming what she says is true, she's a new book blogger. I've never even requested an arc, partially because I don't think I have the stats/history to get one yet, and partially because I think older books deserve some blogger love. Whoever this girl was, she obviously has some jealousy issues.

We all love your site (as is obvious by the 600+ followers), so don't let it get you down!

That was wrong on so many levels...

Bullying and jealously are a sign of one thing - a low self-image. If one feels secure with herself, then that person has no need to attack others.

I could be too simplistic with this, but here is my take. The more you grow in the blogging community, the bigger of a target you become and the more these types of things will occur. I mean, if you had like three followers, I highly doubt this would have happened. This is people venting out their jealous nature.

Great post! What you are doing rocks...you are an inspiration to the book blogging community.

Wow, I can't believe someone even sent that! I think you're doing a great job!

And posting reviews for books you ended up not liking is not a bad thing-- it keeps your blog honest!

I think people like this are being ridiculous. Just because we're not 16 anymore does not mean we do not enjoy reading YA! Everyone has a right to read what they want. And if the reviews you post "needed work" then why would authors be asking you to review their books? Their thought process is very flawed.

We're here to support you Kristi! x)

Anyway, keep up the good work Kristi.

That's awful. I am, of course, referring to the whole bit. But the grammar, that's REALLY awful. If I could I'd take a red pen and count the mistakes used. I mean really, if you're going to send hate mail at least pretend to have the literary skills of a sixteen year old. And they said you were too old to read YA - their what? Too young to use commas?

Anyway, I'm a bit of a grammar nazi I guess. It is really sad when this happens. Completely ridiculous.

Ok so your greedy because you get all the arcs.... but doesn't it make her greedy too because she wants them instead of you?

I admit sometimes I get a little blogger jealousy over the in my mailbox posts, but then I remember that there are others that are probably jealous of mine. And then I also look at how many followers the blog has... Like you have over 600, so if I was an author or publisher I would send them to you because it is more likely they will be seen. And of course I know how hard you would of had to work to achieve such a following.

Also I just turned 20, so I am not to far away from the teen range... but I like reading YA because it tends to be a lot less sexual than adult fiction, which I feel weird reading. ;)

Kind of curious as to exactly who this "we" is that Lena is speaking on behalf of. Is there an actual "we", or just a royal "we" in the sense of one person?

Really ironic, actually, that this peron's commenting on your reviews whilst sending such a poorly composed e-mail.

"I hope you get what you deserve. It's called karma." Oh, for teh lulz! For teh lulz, I tell you! Maybe Karma will come back around.

Sorry. That's just laughable and makes me question the way some teens are being raised today and whether the failure is on the parents' part of the kids' part. Or both.

I think decorum is needed and most of the time it's best to just let it lie because the increase in blood pressure is just not worth it but sometimes, just sometimes, idiocy like this is best left to public mockery. And nothing says 'go fuck a barbed wire pole' like publicly taunting the complete and utter morons that insist on not picking up a hobby like normal people, but spending their time attacking others completely unprovoked because they're bored/jealous/mentally unstable/whatever.

Keep reviewing whatever you want, and reading and watching anything you like!
We shouldn't be tied down because of these mean people.

*I'd pay to see their faces when they see so many supporting comments*

Anonymous you must be Lena.

If she is too old to understand YA books, how then, are the authors able to write YA books when they themselves are generally "Old" authors.

Kristi has her right to love, like, dislike or hate a book. The publishers, whom you are calling idiots, choose who they choose. If this is your maturity level, it's no wonder you don't get the ARCs you so dream to receive.

Go kick rocks. Oh and show your blog so we can read how quality your reviews are.
Erica said...
Ummm anon - I think reviews are OPINION for a reason. I mean a say 12-14 yr old will like different books that a 24 year old. Or a 16 yr old and a 30 year. It's all opinion so please stop plaguing with your hate. It's unnecessary. We're a friendly blogging community, and if you don't like part of it, alright keep it to yourself.

You know Anonymous, or Lena as I think along the same lines of Jaime.

Why are you even still following this blog if you dislike it so much? If you don't want to read what Kristi has to say, then don't. Others of us like to read her opinions, and just because she doesn't like a book, doesn't mean others are of the same opinion. This is because Kristi gives HER opinion.

No one makes you read her, or any one else's blog. There's no need for such an attack.
La Coccinelle said...
LOL... Who does she think writes most YA fiction?

Wow, you know last night I read and commented on the review of Immortal and it looks like Anon is dying for attention again. I guess this person is not aware how utterly pathetic they look to everyone else right now.

Do I get jealous that you get tons of books? Of course, but that's the fun of drooling over everyone's mailboxes. It's very obvious if anyone took five seconds to look through your blog they would see YOU have put a lot of time that you didn't have to into making your blog the way it is. It's not like you made this blog yesterday, it's been running for a couple years. If I were an author - heck yea, I'd send you my book! You read constantly. I'm a blogger too and I envy your reading abilites.

I'm also 24. Yep, not a teen, but I still read tons of teen books. I'm curious of the line Lena wrote about how you couldn't understand a teen book because you're old. Um...hhmm...okay, how old are the authors that write these teen books? How old are these authors that have their own blog and read tons of YA and tell others to read it? Reading has never had an age limit - that's the joy of it. I think Lena and whatever newbie bloggers seem to agree with her email need to remember that. And no wonder they're not getting any books sent to them - look how they present themselves.

The only reason why I started my blog was because it looked fun. It takes a lot of work, but it's still fun. Thanks for the post Kristi!

Between this and the criticism Trish received, what a week in the book blogging community.

I had something similar happen on a review I did where I didn't like the book, although I suspect it was the author posting as different people. It didn't bother me personally, but she made some very negative, critical comments about another blogger who hadn't liked the book either. And that is just unnecessary. She then made disparaging remarks about those who didn't like her book on her personal blog.

I think it's sad really, that a few petulant people let their petty jealousies control them. Your response to this was terrific.

I have 1 more thing to say to the ladies that wrote you such awful things:

Story Siren has worked very hard to make a beautiful blog and earn readership.

Popularity comes from quality of product not from entitlement. You are entitled only to what you earn and what you make. Your level of achievement can only be measured in how hard you try.

In simpler terms:
Don't hate - work for it.

I find it funny how Anon seems to think Kristi's opinion and what I assume anyone blogger that isn't a teenager (becuase ya know, we've never been one apparently) shouldn't matter. Yet this person wants everyone to listen to their opinion when they can't even put their name or their own site up.

Jaime - Those were my thoughts as well! I mean, it's human nature to wait for a reaction and then respond.

I'm not exactly a teenager anymore, though only out of those years by like two years. There is no rule saying we aren't allowed to read YA books.

And I agree with Jaime. I think you are just scared and have to post anonymously because of that fear.

Wow. Just... wow. I am shocked and horrified that there are people out there who behave in this manner. Most people I know are so kind, sweet, and genuine, and then every once in a while you come across the one person or two who ruins the reputation of all those in the group. That cowardly person who wrote the email is an example of the type of people that adults who go "teens these days..." are griping about.

I don't know if I can say anything that one doesn't already instinctively know (except for these few people, apparently), but you're right: the email was not done in a professional manner. Neither were the comments. In any case the attacked can stand by his or her right to a higher intellect and ignore this pitiful display of jealousy. Never stop reading YA and being who you are, Kristi!

I have already said my peace once, but I feel like this must be addressed again. It is truly sad that some (or one) feels the need to personally attack someone in this manner. I find it heartbreaking that we cannot all find some way to get along. Yes, we all have different opinions, but that is what makes us different.

Anon(s): you have had your say. Please discontinue voicing your ugly, hateful, and down right childish comments. We get the point that you do not like something about Kristi or her site. But if you are actually wanting people listen to you or what you have to say, then you are going about it in the completely wrong way. At this point, all you have done is curse and spew hatred and no one is going to take what you have to say seriously.

The reason Kristi has so many people defending her is because we enjoy her in the blogging community. She does not need to be hateful in order to get readers. The fact that you are hiding behind the Anon comments and will not tell us who you are makes you seem childish, pathetic and discredits anything you may say in the future.

If you do not like her posts, comments, etc. then either do not follower her or offer the correct form of critism in a professional manner. There is a much better way to handle this situation. I hope that we can all learn something from this dark side and be better because of it.

WOW, this is crazy. I don't think the blogging community should have such hostility. I am a new blogger myself and I definitely DON'T agree with anything in that email. Teens can read adult books, adults can read teen books. There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with that. If I'm expected to stop reading YA books when I'm an adult, then I hope I stay young forever. Publishers do not send you books for no reason. You DESERVE them. And your reviews should be truthful. People have different opinions on different books. Obvious basic fact. When publishers or authors send you books, they are taking a risk. It MAY recieve a bad review. But, obviously, that's a risk they're willing to take. You deserve every book you get, Kristi.

I've gotten rude comments about some of my reviews as well. Here's a clue: JUST BECAUSE I DON'T LIKE IT, DOESN'T MEAN THAT OTHER PEOPLE WON'T! I hate comments that are rude, especially when they are unintelligent. And all of those comments are signed by... Anon. These people don't even have the guts to tell me who they are.

This is so ridiculous.
Jaime said...
Not jealous??? ROFLMAO. If you weren't you wouldn't be getting all stalkerific on this blog. If you want the books, then you need to be an exemplary teen (LMAO.. which I can see by your comments, you are far from it) with a good blog (have no idea since you are too much of a chicken to post as anything other then anon), and network and build a reputation instead of spewing forth all this disgusting word vomit and using the horrible names you are using. Your parents ought to be ashamed of themselves for raising you to talk the way you do

Oh and... everybody else.. you rock!

You are awesome Maggie!
CaRiiToO said...

Lauren said...
I haven't been blogging long, but I want to add my voice to all those speaking in support of Kristi. She's a great blogger. Not only that, but by hosting In My Mailbox she *helps* new bloggers to find a readership. I sure had a lot of new commenters today, and they came via here.

I am not a teenager myself. I read YA because there are so many awesome books. I'm sure most (non-teen) YA authors read a lot of YA too. I only started my blog a week ago, but I'd been following this blog and a few other established ones for a long time before that. I started blogging because I love YA books, not to get books for free. I guess some people have a different motivation.

I do understand that some teens really can't afford a lot of books, but I don't think you have to be reviewing ARCs for a review to be interesting. Sure, I like to read reviews of upcoming books, but someone who loves YA could easily go to a library and carve out a niche for themselves with unusual 'finds' that don't get as much attention as the big new releases. Then - who knows - they might get a great reputation as a blogger and find a few ARCs coming their way. There are some great teenage voices on the blogging scene, who are in it for the right reasons. I believe that writers/publicists would notice this, and would be able to tell the difference between a dedicated reviewer with a great 'voice' and one who is in it mainly for the free stuff. I'm confident that the right people are getting the ARCS, or will do in the future. *That's* karma.

The haters are cowards. And, with that kind of vocabulary, I don't even want to think about what *their* reviews would be like.
La Coccinelle said...
I'm curious as to Anonymous' criteria for a blogger being "deserving" of books? Does having a site dedicated to YA literature not count? Or maybe age is all that matters.

Personally, if I were a YA author, I'd much rather send a copy of my book to someone like Kristi than some random teenager who doesn't even have a book blog...
Casey said...
Unbelievable! Kristi I love your blog! Don't let Anon #1, Anon #2, or Lena (although they are more than likely the same person) get you down.

I'm not going to repeat the same things everyone else has said. But you do a fabulous job at reviewing and I love how you are honest. That's a great quality. It isn't your fault that publishers and authors personally ask you to review their book. You do get a lot of books, but you also do a ton of great contests, giving away lots of books.

Great post!

Don't mind me, I'm just stalking this post :) It seems that this email and bashing thing has gone a bit too far and for a bit too long. Linda Ellen said...
That's an email from a very mean person. They have no right telling you what to do and what not to do.

I feel lucky I haven't come across a situation like that, yet, but as you've mentioned, it's bound to happen. Don't let these things bring you down.

If you're still wondering why you have such a huge following, it's because we love you. Being a little more "rational", it's because we like reading the content you post up, learning about new books and new authors, and honesty goes a long way. =)
Mary K. from L.A. said...
Hi! Just wanted to add my support to you and your blog, Kristi.

Of course you've a right to read whatever you want, and a right to your opinion. Anon/Lena/whatever is missing the point: if she wants to get as many books as you, she has to DO something for them.

When I first started blogging and realized that other bloggers were getting books to review, instead of getting all pissy and blaming the bloggers, I contacted some publishers & authors directly or went to publishers websites and asked for books to review. Then I read them and reviewed them on my blog. Now I too get requests from authors and publishers to review books.

I don't choose to be as prolific a reviewer as you, and thus don't receive as many books to review, but it's my choice and I'm good with it.

Keep up the good work and don't let the losers (anon/Lena/whatever) get you down or stop you from doing what you do so well.
Julie said...
Yeah, go Maggie! Think I'll start something too. Anon, and Lena, you are entitled to your opinions, but so is everyone else. And calling names and being just plain nasty about it is unprofessional and childish.

Did you stop to think that YA isn't written by teens, either? Most YA, the YA books you love, are written by adults, myself included. We write YA because we love YA. The same is true for bloggers. They review because they love it. And it doesn't matter their age or gender, the blogosphere exits because of a mutual love for books.

Kristi has such a large following because she is doing something right, nothing more. No one is being forced to read her blog; the fact that she has a lot of followers and recieves a lot of books is testament to the hard work she puts in everyday. Perhaps if you focused more on making your blog something to read about, instead of viciously attacking a fellow blogger, you would see the same success.

Sorry this post is so long. Kristi, keep doing exactly what you're doing. And know that you have everyone's support, mine as well.
Jennifer Lynn Barnes said...
Just another author wanting to chime in and say that as someone who both reads and writes YA (and has done both since I was a teen myself), I enjoy and respect your blog and views. :)

Seriously, this is just hilarious.

Anon, silly Anon. A person is allowed to not like A book. A person is allowed to not like many books.

You are allowed to not like a book, or a person. The thing about growing up is learning that everyone is allowed their opinions and you don't have to listen to them. WHAT A CONCEPT. But if your parents could see the way you are acting, you would be ashamed. If your friends saw your desperate attempts for attention with your multiple copy-and-pasted comments and miserably uncreative use of profanity, they would roll their eyes and walk away.

There is no power in getting into arguments online. There is only shame. And, unfortunately, you're taking the blunt load of shame by not using your name or linking to YOUR blog of book reviews.

- Kate

PS - I got a lot of ARCs reviewing for a newspaper. About 30 a month. I didn't read them all. I didn't like them all, even though I was 16 and the books were about teenagers. Isn't that odd?

Anon. Please. Kristi doesn't need to grow up. Growing up does not mean you need to leave behind a love for YA books. If anyone should be growing up, I really believe it should be you.

And if you'll take notice, there isn't only bad reviews on TSS. There's plenty of reviews that give books high ratings. Hello, I'm a teenager and I too give books bad ratings.

You're giving teenagers a bad reputation. Most do not think that way. I know I don't. And judging by others commenting, I'm not the only one.

Sigh. Methinks Anon isn't actually reading any of the comments, otherwise she would realize everyone loves Kristi and not her and she has no support here.

Methinks this is a desperate attempt to get attention. Possibaly because no one loves her and she has no friends.

How sad.

Kristi, if you turn on your comment moderator, I think everyone would understand. You don't need to be bombarded by insults from serial spammers.

I think Anonymous - whoever they may be - should STFU. At least until they get brave enough to, you know, actually use a /name/.

Still love ya, Kristi.

I'm over 30.
I've been reviewing YA books for quite a few years now, first for Science Fiction Chronicle, then for Realms of Fantasy, and I've done my fair share of receiving the ARCS and free books from publishers. And y'know what?

I'll stop reviewing YA when I alone decide that I can no longer relate to the issues, themes, characters, stories and tropes in question. You can have my YA books when you pry them from my death-grip. I support anyone who reviews YA books in a mature, enthusiastic fashion, whether they're 13, 30, or 90.

Note I said mature. Anon, stop trolling. If you really want ARCs, earn them. Kristi posted lots of ways for teens to get ahold of books, if you look through her posts.

Sigh. Kids these days. :>

wow folks I leave for 2 hours to go get books with my sister and this all happens?

I shouldn't ever leave the house if all the fun is here!

And for Anon--for the record, I'm 25 and my sister is 16. I read YA and she reads mainstream 'adult' fiction as you labeled it.

Kristi I won't say I'm glad it happened to you ('cause really I'm not), but I'm glad it didn't happen to me. I'd be in a anxiety induced coma at the moment if I had to handle what this 'person' or 'people' were saying (justly or otherwise).

You know Anon, purely out of speculation, are you not posting your name or any of the other 'teen' bloggers who feel this way b/c you know you'll get blacklisted by authors, bloggers and publishers alike? This isn't the way to go about building relationships with others if you truly want more books.

I wish you would post your name--I want to see what you're like in the future.

Oh, gosh. It's no use. Anon is pathetic and she won't even read what we're saying. She's just repeating the same thing over and over.

We all know that Lena/Anon#1 and #2 are the same person. Like someone said above: Same IP addresses!

Notice that EVERYONE is behind Kristi BUT the two Anon with the same IP Address! She's the only one! Where is this so called group of people who don't follow TSS? You are just a pathetic brat. There is really nothing else to do but to block Anon's and moderate the comments and tell Kristi that we love her and her blog.

(Sorry everyone, Anon is just pissing me off.)

Kristi! You don't have to post this on your blog (It's just easier then sending an email). Go you! Sorry it had to end up with comment moderation.

Stay strong!!! We all love you!

*waves hand* YA author here- and when I made my list of reviewers I hoped would cover my book, you were on the top of it. You're thorough, you're honest, and you're genuinely enthusiastic about YA fiction.

There's a reason why Random House thinks your quotes are valuable enough to print *in* their books. And there's a reason why Lena will never know that feeling. Too much time spent worry about other people instead of themselves.

I'm not sure if you remember my first email to you back in June thanking you for such a great blog and inspiration for me to start my own but I hope you take those types of emails into consideration more than the ones from these little girls who are inspired by nothing more than petty jealousy. I work in a middle school and I know the maturity of a middle schooler when I see it! I'm glad you deleted the post by ANON...they were simply vulgar and annoying.
I'm not even going to mention MY age or my blog might be obliterated into the YA blogosphere!
As a middle school librarian I'll be reading YA/teen books until my cataracts prevent me from reading ANYTHING!
Blog on sister and don't let the "mean girls" get you down!
With much YA book blogger love,

Holy crap, what the heck was she thinking? I thought it was pretty funny, Kristi, I'm pretty new to blogging, only been doing it a couple of mths, but I think I'm doing a pretty good job so far..but I don't sit here saying 'Damn that Kristi for getting so many books.' I'm sure when you first started nobody knew you until you started promoting yourself, it's time consuming but hey if you're passionate about it, then you'll do it. So by all means ignore this attack towards you, not all new bloggers feel this way...I actually look up to you and your accomplishment and strive to have a blog that's as popular as yours one day. And if some people feel like this they need to chill because reading isn't about violence, it's suppose to be relaxing. So if you work hard, then you'll get the books for review...it doesn't come easy...and Kristi we're never too old to read YA, I'm 24 years old and I'll always love them, so f that hehe ..

Sorry to hear about your recent "slam" emails. That's terrible. If they have a problem with your reviews, there are other ways to express that without name-calling.

I wonder, if you are too old to read YA, perhaps the authors should stop writing it because many of them are not TEENS.

Wow... it is like mean girls online. I think that this is just ridiculous, people are allowed to read whatever the hell they want... end of story. I am 20 but I still read young adult because I enjoy them. Maybe annoynomous will learn that when they grow up. Young adult books are easier to read because they are not always as serious, and when you are older it is nice to read something younger and more simplistic. I did not start blogging to receive free books, I did it because I love reading and if thse people just want free shit they can enter a bunch of contests and get it that way. People need to grow up and realize that being petty like this makes no one like you. Stupid hos.

I'm so sorry you were targeted by such immature and spiteful bloggers. Hang in there, Story Siren; you have my full support on this matter. Your professionalism in handling this mess and sticking up yourself and your followers was most admirable.
Maybe I'll start a movement for the civil rights of bloggers. Everyone's got a right to read what they want and review honestly. I'll make a badge! And every time someone thinks about saying something cruel to a blogger, and they see the badge, they'll know that not just messing with that one blog, they're messing with whole community! What do y'all think?

What difference does age matter for a book, the constant pigeon holing books into genres can only be made to look worse by readers and blogger stating that books in a certain genres can only be read and commented on by people of that age. Does that mean only teens can write teen books and people not be allowed to comment on anything but books written by their own age.

That is total garbage, people of any age can read and comment on any age book. My own YA book has had reviews and comments from people between ten and eighty. Just because it gets classed as YA does not mean it can't be enjoyed by people of all ages.

A book is written to be enjoyed by readers no matter WHAT THEIR AGE. Classics like Black Beauty and Winnie the Pooh are not written with a note "to be read by teens only"
What next? Parents un-allowed to watch Disney or cartoons?

As a writer I don't care what age of people read, comment or review my book I am just grateful people have taken the time out to read and enjoy the work we have produced.

I have interviewed numerous writers who have stated over and over again how much the bloggers are appreciated... bloggers of ALL AGES. That is why I try and have blogger guests on my show, as their views are important to any writer.

I would be only TOO happy to have you as a guest on my radio show and I know a huge number of authors would be only to glad to dial in and have their say on the matter.

Sounds like you ran into one of the many teens I teach. I absolutely love your blog. Before I became a part of the blogging world I, a teacher of teens, got all of my books from a school book club always wondering how everyone always knew about the "really good" books. After I started blogigng, I found sites like yours that gave me a heads up on great books. As far as you receiving books, I have started receiving and reviewing books myself. Because of it I have a lot more books to put on my shelves at school for these students. Some of us read YA not only because we enjoy it but because we want to share good books with other teens. I say yea for you, keep up the great work. I for one will continue to send people your way and continue to follow you. Sorry you had to have a sour grape on your vine.

You shouldn't feel the need to defend yourself. You have every right to express your opinion, which is what your blog is about. If someone doesn't like it, they can move on.

I really enjoy your reviews. They are not to short. They are just right. Personally, I don't like long winded reviews. I'm an adult that likes to read ya too. I know many who do.

I wonder if this is the same person that left you the negative anon comment.

Yeah, us 20-somethings should stick to the retirement home or be put to pasture, since we are so elderly.

What a dumb bitch, the girl who sent you that letter (NOT YOU).

I am a "newbie blogger" and Lena absolutely does not speak for me, I think those who work the hardest do deserve the ARCs and for those of us who don't get them, there's always contests!

Also, I can't believe that one anon commenter who is ripping on another blogger, Jamie, for not being a fan of Twilight. Are you for real? Why would anyone be jealous of Bella, pregnant at 18/19, married, no college, no distinguishing characteristics? Wow, some people need to pull their heads out of their asses.

At least most of the book-blogging community is full of genunine, awesome, marvellous people!

Oh this is Pam from bookalicio.us I just want to press the anon button for fun, it seems to be all the rage.

What a lovely email. Golly. 0_o

I am noticing a pattern of the same things being said over and over again. It's not a new argument just because you leave a second comment. What I am getting is: you get too many free books, this other person gets none, you're old (HA! What am I then?), this other person is not and apparently your greedy. Well, you DO take a while to send books to Canada (hahah) but I can't hold that against you.

I like whomever said "Wow it's like mean girls online". Ha! Maybe this is all some sort of Candid Camera gag?

Hang in there. This will blow over. Next week they will find someone else to taunt.

How can you have the same views as a teen when you are not one. And your reviews could use some work to. They are a little short don't you think. Like we said let the real teens have a chance."

Most of the authors are up 30 so they should stop writing too?

I'm 24 I didn't realize that made me OLD do I get to retire now? hehehe.

Anyway I really enjoy YA books still and I don't see why I can't read and review what I enjoy! I don't enjoy most adult books, except for historical romance novels from time to time, because I don't find the stories as interesting and I think adult books often contain unnecessary amounts of violence/language.

Please do me a favour and DON'T stop blogging. Kristi, a few bloggers out there treat ARCs a bit too much like trading cards or medals and act like they are above everyone. You don't. I honestly think you're right at the top both in terms of your blog itself and as a role model for other bloggers.

Even if you weren't, the email wasn't very nice. You'd get lots of comments saying how anon. doesn't know what they're talking about, but as it happens, you are amazing! You've been one of the pioneers of the YA blogging community and of course some people will get jealous. You get the perks but apparently you get the minuses too. Ever since I found your blog it's struck me over and over again how not only are you a great blogger, but you're so nice with it! And as far as I've seen, you're one of the few who deosn't do more talking about reviewing books than actually reviewing them (I'm in the bad category unfortunately) Simply put, I believe this person doesn't speak for us all, or even a large percentage (talking about we and then siging it off with one name doesn't suggest a group effort). I really respect what you've done, so thankyou.

Okay, so my mom follows your blog in google reader because she LOVES it (and ya books -- wait. Is that illegal now?) and when she showed this to me, you have NO IDEA how mad I was getting. And, uhm, the bad cuss words that were running through my head. xD

Personally, your blog is one of the blogs that made me want to start my own. This blog is like the role model for mine. So. Thought I'd say that first.

Also, if this "Lena" and anon knew how this worked, they would know that you don't request a lot of books. When watching your IMM posts, I see that you buy most of your books, that you are contacted by the author or publisher for most of the books, or they just get sent randomly. So, personally, I don't see how you're hoggin' all the ARCs.

Also, so what if you didn't like a book? I don't like all the books I read, either, and that's the whole PURPOSE of a book reviewing blog. To give your OPINION whether it agrees with other people or not.

Does this person even realize that ADULTS are the ones writing a majority of these books? Editing them? Putting them in the library? Publishing them? So obviously just because you're an adult, that doesn't mean you're too old for YA. Heck, I don't think I'll ever grow out of it. Or Winnie the Pooh (which I really do still watch at sixteen).

I'm really glad you posted this Kristi. Shit does happen but I'm glad that you're not going to let this get to you -- your blog is too amazing for you to let a few petty e-mails and anon comments get to you.

hope.

Oh. And just in case this person who wrote that e-mail is reading: If you're going to send out hate mail, at least use good grammar...
Rebecca said...
It's a shame when some people get jealous of things and take it out on other people.
When that person says they're a new blogger doesn't that instantly say well hello of course you're not going to just get free books. As you've said in one of your advice blogs, take your time, get your blog established first. Which is of course what you have done.
I admire that you don't take no shit from anybody. Keep up the good work Kristi your blog rocks.

Anon- If you knew ANYTHING about reviewing, and not just blog reviewing but reviewing in general, you would know that a lot of ARCs go to adults. Who do you think writes reviews for newspapers, magazines, and journals? How do you think librarians choose what YA books to get? Who do you think actually WRITES these YA books you want so badly? They are all adults and publishers send out advance copies to all of them. Do you have a problem with them recieving the books too?

If Kristi enjoys YA (as do a lot of adults, including myself), then she should be able to read it and review it. I think it's funny how you say that she moans about books when it's very few YA books that she gives low ratings to. Do you know how many 4 or 5 star reviews she's given? A lot. No one is going to like every book that comes their way- that's just how things work. It's the same with any other medium, no matter how young or old you are.

And there are plenty of teen bloggers who are recieving ARCs too- Kristi and I are friends with a lot of them. Just because you're not getting ARCs doesn't mean that any one person is hogging them, esp. when reviewers just get 1 copy. How is that in any way hogging? It just means that the publisher doesn't think your blog is good enough or worth it yet.

Also, do you chase adults out of the YA section in your bookstore because they might be buying and hogging all the YA books? Do you point toward the adult fiction section and shout "YOU BELONG OVER THERE NOT HERE!!!"? Hopefully not, so why should it be any different here online? Everyone has the right to read and review what they want on their own blog. This is Kristi's space to post her opinions on books. If you don't like it, write your own reviews and don't read hers. But publishers are not going to take you seriously as a reviewer if you're badmouthing other reviewers. And thusly, you won't be recieving any ARCs. Focus your energy on your own blog and not bringing down others and you'll recieve the ARCs you seem to covet so much.

I'm probably triple, quadruple, or more the age of "Lena" (plus I have EXTREME contempt for anonymous posts/email/whatever when the only purpose is to harass the person on the receiving end; if you don't have the guts to sign your name and deal with the consequences, your posts are even more pathetic and meaningless) and I constantly read YA. This is NOT b/c I also write YA--I love books for teens and have read them my entire life. The rudeness + the presumptuous attitude of this person is mind-boggling. I certainly hope no one named Lena requests one of my ARCS.

BTW, your blog rocks. :)
Genevieve said...
Kristi- You're an awesome person and blogger. Lena is crazy because she doesn't know what she is talking about. Being a book blogger is really hard and you have been able to manage an awesome book blog. It's not like authors/publishers are randomly sending you books-- they send you stuff because you are one of the best book bloggers out there.

And trust me, you're not the only one. I've received some hate mail about my blog or being in FiveAwesomeYAFans and I'm not a big blogger like you. People get jealous or mean about the weirdest things.

And that is SO stupid that you're 'too old' to be reading/reviewing YA. If that was true, then I'd be too old at 20. And like one of the commenters said-- then the authors are too old to be writing YA, seeing how they are not teenagers.

Keep blogging. You don't have 650 followers for nothing.
