I’ve been getting a lot of emails about advice for book blogs. So, I’ve decided to do some posts about just that.
Please take into consideration that these are only my suggestions. You can agree or disagree with them. I’m not saying you have to follow them, and I’m not saying I’m a blogging expert, but I’ve picked up a few things here and there.
Today’s topic is Getting Started.
You’ve decided that you’d like to try out this whole blog thing. Great! But the most important question once you’ve decided to go through with it is, where? So, where can I blog?
Here are a few sites that you might want to check out. It’s always good to get information about each place, their benefits and disadvantages before you start.
Blogger
Wordpress
MySpace
Livejournal
Typepad
These are just a few service providers. Check out the sites, see which ones you like. My site is hosted by Blogger, so it’s all a matter of preference. Each host had different incentives, I don't think there is one that's perfect, but find one that fits what you are trying to. Most of them have the option to export your posts to one host from another, so you can always change your mind. Once you figure out where, it’s on to step two.
Design!
You want to pick a color scheme that fits your voice! Make sure that your color scheme is easy to read and easy on the eyes. Remember this is the first impression of your blog! Some color don’ts:
- Dark post background with dark font.
- Really bright colors that hurt your eyes. Like a neon green post background with neon pink font! AHH!! And the bad thing is I’ve seen it!
- Busy backgrounds... noone is going to read your reviews if your site makes them queasy.
Maybe you’d like to do a custom design. Just type blog templates into your google search and I’m sure a dozen host sites will pop up! A really good site I’ve found is called Tips For New Bloggers, they explain pretty much how to do everything, from a three column layout to adding a custom background. It’s a great resource! I use it all the time!
Here are a few places where you can get some template ideas or codes:

Also you could try to make a header that portrays your site. It doesn’t have to be fancy. Something simple with your blog name! Have fun with it!
Once you’ve gotten the design part figured out, maybe some widgets and elements would be a good idea. I try to stick the bare minimum when it comes to this, personally. I don’t want too many gadgets on the sidebar taking away from what I’ve got going on, on my main blog post.
And remember, a big part of your design is how you are planning on utilizing your blog. If you hope to one day be contacting authors and publishers, remember that and try to make your site look somewhat “professional.”
Most importantly, just have fun with it. You don’t even have to listen to me! These are just suggestions, not rules! Ultimately, do what you like.
I'm hoping to have more posts featuring:
- Visitors
- Content
- Getting Books
- etc..
What do you think? Is there something you agree with, disagree with? Maybe you have your own tips that would pertain to this post?

Conversely, be careful not to have too much white space. This is twofold: Play with shades of white and spacing content so white space isn't equally blinding.
Blogs are about reading. I don't want to be overwhelmed by visuals. Use streamlined layouts, and simple backgrounds. Use smaller images or widgets to accent your blog but skip the wallpaper.
I am old. I cannot, will not read large blocks of texts in very tiny print.
I hate blinking or scrolling messages. I'm here to read not to play an interactive game. Skip the music.
I think widgets and gadgets are useful but be selective. Use widgets and gadgets that enhance or create the kind of experience you want your reader to have.
All users do not have memory or speed to support all the cool stuff you put on your blog. Slow loading is a sure way to turn off readers.
Ask yourself what features are likely to motivate you to spend more time on a blog and returning often?
Good post.
Great advice.
In the old days,(ask me how long I've been online), we use to share with readers the best viewing size to read our website. I've forgotten the technical terms but in your control panel you can adjust how large text appears on your page.

Advice for new book Bloggers
Well, you know what I want you to talk about and I'm sure you will! :P
If you are starting a blog for the purpose of getting free books -- guys, it shows. Worry less about your header graphics and more about providing lots of great content that will draw visitors into your blog. Look at the story siren: she regularly posts reviews, interviews, contests, round ups, etc., and hers is a popular blog visited by tons of readers! Publicists send promotional materials to "big mouths," not to freeloaders just looking for an excuse to score arcs.
I like my black background with colorful fonts, but if it hurts the eyes, I hope someone lets me know and I'll reconsider.
As for music & video players, there is nothing I dislike more than when it auto-plays when you load the page. If I'm going to include a player, I try to get the coding where it plays only when you click for it to play.
Thanks again for the sharing the advice, Kristi!

I understand your frustration too. I feel it as well! And I don't even have books to offer, but I get emails all the time for people looking for "free" books. It is going to be addressed in one of my future "blog tips" post.
Susan: Lots of good advice! Thanks.
And I'm glad I'm not the only one who hates music players! I agree Taren.. what do they have to do with books?
Alea... do I know? Were we talking about this the other night? Because yes, that is going to be addressed as well!
And I completely agree! There is nothing more frustrating than waking up early, checking out some blogs, and suddenly hear annoying music blast out of your computer.
"And if you are just in for the free books, the time investment probably isn't worth your while. You'd be better off getting a part time job and BUYING the books."
Well if your putting time and investment in your blog that's a good thing, Lenore.
A bad thing would be if there weren't putting any time or investment in it and getting free books.
just wanted to clear that up. =)
