How do you get all those BOOKS?

Monday, December 1, 2008
I’ve been getting a lot of emails recently since I started doing the “In My Mailbox” posts, asking “How do you get all of those books?” So I thought I would address it here in case anyone else was wondering the same thing.

First off, let me start by saying that I know it seems like I get books every week, but I’ve just had a few good weeks recently, it usually IS NOT like that at all!

Believe it or not, it doesn’t happen overnight either. I’ve almost been blogging a year now and let me tell you, when I started I DID NOT get any books in the mail. And really it didn’t bother me. And I wouldn't suggest starting a book blog if you are using it for the sole purpose of gaining free books. I DO NOT have this site to get free books, I’m not going to lie and say that it isn’t a nice incentive, because it is, but I do it because I love to read, I always have, I probably always will. Now that, that is out of the way, lets continue.

A lot of major publishing houses have early reviewer programs for teens. HarperTeen, Random House, Simon & Schuster and Henry Holt are some, just to name a few. There are also bookish sites, like BookDivas and Young Adults Book Central (YABC). I actually have a list of links and some blogging tips from a guest post I did at Harmony Book Reviews, you can check out that post here. Those sites offer ARC (advance reader copies) but there are a lot of members and the companies are limited on how many ARCs they can print, so you might not always get the book you want. Still you should try them out. Do note that most of these programs are for residents of the US, but I do know Harper had a similar program in Canada.

It wasn’t until I was blogging for about five or six months, that I had a steady flow of books to review. And by steady, I mean one book a week, on the good weeks. Luckily I had a few authors and publishers who had faith in my little book site and it grew from there.

My preferred method of contact is to have authors/publishers/publicists contact me. I just started, and by just started I mean in the last month or so (October-November 2008), reversing that method of contact. (although I still prefer it that way). And I’m only doing it now, because I believe my site has something to offer. On an average I gain about 500 visitors a day. That’s 3,500 visitors a week, around 14,000 visitors a month. Now to some bloggers that’s nothing, but for me, I don’t feel like I’m asking for a handout, when I say “Hey I’d love to review your book.” because I’m not only saying that, but also.... not only am I interested but the totally excellent and awesome people that stop by my site are going to see it too and they might get interested.

So there it is. I think I said everything I wanted to say. Which is basically, just to sum it all up for you, I have no idea how I get all those books, I like to think it’s luck!

Hopefully that answers the question and then some. Don’t be afraid to email me if you do have any questions, I’m always up for that. I’ll try to answer them as best as possible, but really I have no idea what I’m doing. :)

In faith, I assume that most bloggers aren't here for the free stuff. And if I'm right, then that's cool, because the more people around who love reading and talking about books, the better. I know that tons of sites get tons of hits a day (I won't even try to estimate) but 400 a day, to me, is extremely awesome and I'm sure that many bloggers aspire to be as awesome a reviewer as you and have a site as succesful as yours. (hint, hint)
And does anyone really know what they're doing?

What if you get a book from a publicist would you have to email them when you received the book?

Tay-Toe, I couldn't agree more! And I think that 400 hits a day is beyond extremely awesome, I seriously think that there is something wrong with my stat counter.

Anon, I'm not sure exactly what your asking. would you mind elaborating?

That totally helps cause I've been wondering the same thing. I'll have to check those websites out. I usually get my book by winning contest[once in a blue moon], which I enter EVERY SINGLE ONE I come across. lol. But I'm pretty satisfied with that cause I haven't gotten a flow on reviewing books yet.

oh sorry! I did word that weird. Say, if you get a review book from an author/publicist do you email them back saying that you received the book on the day you got it.

Here's a scenario:
Author X send me out a review book via mail on Monday. I then recieve it 3 days later. DO I email Author X and say I got the book, so they know I got the book.

I was just asking for advice because your experience in the book blogging world. :)

Anon is asking if you get a book specifically from a publicist (or even randomly from one), do you have to email them to let them know that you received it.

Normally, I do, unless I can't find their email address in the package or in my address book.

And if you come across any questions you can't answer, ask me and I can give it a go, lol. :)

Great post, by the way!!

Ah, now that you've clarified, it's more clearer. Anyway, yeah, the publicist part I covered above. For authors, yes, I always let them know I got the book, just so they can be sure that it arrived safely. And if the book takes a while to get here, I'll email them to see what's going on with it.

Hope that helps!

I always send an email confirmation of receipt. I like to know where things are at all times, so I request authors or publicists tell me when they sent whatever so I know when to expect it. (This cos I live abroad and if something gets lost in traffic, it's a bit complicated.) But don't always expect a response :)

Anyhow, Kristi, totally awesome mention. Thanks!

Pshh, don't be modest! You are a queen of the YA blogging world. Don't you dare deny it! (:

Thanks Steph and BC for answering that for me! And I totally agree with them! It's always nice just to give a heads up.

Emily! I'm hardly the queen, but thanks for thinking so highly of me.

WOW I think you get more hits in a day than I do in a month!

Nice post!

I hope everyone understands, and I'm thinking you all do, that I didn't throw those numbers out there to be conceited or to be condescending to other reviewers, I only wanted to justify my actions on why I am starting to feel comfortable actually asking for a book to review.

I'm paranoid, but I feel better now. :)

Don't worry, you shouldn't be paranoid! That is seriously awesome! :D

Hey, how do you get the stats? Do you have to add something new to your page, or does Blogger/Google automatically do it somewhere?

I get about 10 books a week. Seriously, it has to stop. And if anyone thinks that they are free, I beg to differ. the work a blog takes is overwhelming.

Great post, you're such a gem! :)

Great post. Wow, you get a lot of hits. I probably get less then what you get in a week, for my whole month.
I get 2-3 books a month and that is fine with me. I like deciding when to read books and not have a date overhanging it. I just started really blogging two months ago, and I need to work on how I do my reviews and such.

So I'm looking over some of the websites you suggested (thanks for those!), I hate that I'm too old for some of them, LOL!

Great post! Personally, I haven't really started asking authors/publicists for anything because I'm rather shy and that carries over to my internet personality.

And yes, your site does have something to offer. That's why I stop over here.

I'm really shy too Liviania! and thanks for stopping by!

Thank you for this! This advice is so helpful and very much appreciated by those of us new to blogging.

I do feel a bit too old for YA fiction but reading all these reviews makes me want to check them out again.

I second Morgan's question - is there a preferred vehicle for checking blog visits and demographics?

Thanks!

I was wondering who hosts the In My Mailbox meme, and landed here, then ended up exploring. What a wonderful site! On some sites I visit, I sometimes forget it's a blog. I've only started book blogging and it's a wonderful experience. It's addicting, but wonderful. Thank you for this post! =)
