That girl in your history class will find you.

So there’s that girl in one of your classes who you never liked—she never liked you either, and neither of you had a good reason for it, except that maybe she gave you stink eye at a football game that night when you were out with your new boyfriend. Or there was that time she saw you stop talking the second she walked into the room, making her think (correctly?) that you were just talking about her. It’s nothing particularly mean or viscous, but the thing is, we’re not supposed to be friends with everyone, right? And she kind of bugs.

It’s the last year of high school, or maybe the last year of junior high and you’ll be going to different high schools and thank god you’ll never have to see her again.

But guess what? You’re wrong. Even if you move far, far away for college and never move home again, people will find you. They’ll find you and want to be friends with you. All because you once went to school together and because you both have accounts on Facebook or Myspace or Bebo or Fanpop or Habbo Hotel or whatever is the acceptable social network.

And you know what? That’s actually okay.

There’s just something about the nostalgia of high school that we can’t get away from, no matter how hard we try. I would never say it’s the best years of our lives (can you imagine? You’re 17 and it’s all downhill from there??), but it certainly defines us and helps shape us into adults like few other times in our lives.

And then you graduate, grow up, and it all seems so silly, and almost insignificant, that you didn’t like that girl in your history class because…why was it again? Suddenly you find it really fun to see what she’s up to, and you want to see pictures of her kids (she has kids?!) and her trip to Hawaii and what her husband looks like. Because high school, as sucky as it was, was at least something you all had to suffer through together, right?

Plus, if you grow up to be a writer who writes about high school and junior high, seeing these people again will help spark lots of juicy memories of that stuff that went down in the halls of the school. Like Peter Cameron’s book title says, “Someday this pain will be useful to you.”

Taylor Morris.

I definitely agree that high school is NOT the best time of your life. It's interesting how much you can find out on the internet about people you used to know.

I too feel that nostalgia from highschool. I barely talk to any of my friends from highschool anymore but I always find myself wondering what happened to so and so and reminiscing.

I wonder how many awesome people we went to high school with that were never on our radar because of petty things... too bad (makes me want to go watch The Breakfast Club).

Lol, I totally get that. People I thought didn't even know I existed have added me on Facebook and MySpace. Maybe they don't know who I am and only clicked on me because we went to the same high school. I don't know, I'd like to think they actually did remember me when I thought they wouldn't.

Yeah, high school is so not the best years of your life. I mean, so far I have loved years 15, 16, 17, 19, and 20. (I am only 20, turning 21 in December.) And I am sure that I am going to have more years that I love in the future.

I hope that the people we went to school with remember that it was just school and that it was a short period of time in our lives. That it was not all there is in life and that we can talk about other things.

High school was sooooo not the best time of my life either. Sure I had my close friends. But still, it really sucked.

I agree with the whole Facebook thing too. =)

What an interesting guest blog.
I've run into people from the past online... although none of them are super horrible.
I do think I would use the material of they way those girls act if I write a book, though... good point.

that was a really awesome post, and i can actually relate. after making a facebook/myspace, i've been tempted to add people i went to elementary school with, since i moved away and never kept in contact with any of them. the only thing that's holding me back is that they might not remember me.

I totally agree with your post. I couldn't have said it better myself. Except I'm still waiting for the time when I really can look back, and think about that one girl who made my life miserable and be okay with it. But we shall see. =)

Once I had this really annoying girl in my class who would purposely ask embarassing questions and annoy me. But she moved away...
