Author Tales: Elizabeth Scott

Thursday, September 11, 2008
Elizabeth Scott is the author for this Thursday's Author Tales. Elizabeth is the author of Bloom, Perfect You, Stealing Heaven and Living Dead Girl. Now that summer is over, more or less, I asked Elizabeth what she considered her most memorable summer, and here is what she had to say.....
______________________________________

When I got the request for a blog post about my most memorable
summer, for once I knew exactly what I was going to write about.
(Usually, when I'm asked to write a guest blog, my reactions are:
joy! Someone wants me to write something! 2. panic! Someone
wants me to write something!)

But this one--oh, this one is easy.

My most memorable summer was the one that took place after my
freshman year of college. There weren't a lot of jobs available
where I lived, but the hardware store where I'd worked as a
teenager was willing to hire me back--but with a catch. They didn't
need any cashiers, which is what I'd done before, but they did need
warehouse workers.

I needed the money.

I took the job.

I have never EVER worked so hard in my life. I got up at six, got
dressed, ate breakfast, and then went into work, where I spent
eight hours in an unair-conditioned warehouse unloading freight. I
learned how to use a cherry-picker and drive a forklift. I learned
it was possible to spend six hours up in the highest reaches of the
warehouse, inventorying screws, and not die from the heat.

And then, when work was done, I'd drive home. To my parents'
lovely--but unair-conditioned-- house.

Yes, that's right. My parents don't have central air. I never liked
that, but that summer, the summer I woke up sweating, went to work
and spent all day sweating, and came home to sweat some more taught
me one vital thing about myself:

I like air-conditioning. I like it A LOT.

It seems trivial, I know, but that was the summer that marked the
end of my time living where I grew up. I realized I wanted to do
more than work difficult jobs for low pay, that I wanted to do
something--anything--that would let me live and work where I had
choices that I would never find living in the world I knew best.

I don't regret growing up where I did. But I don't miss it, and
that summer, that final summer I spent at home, was the one where I
learned that sometimes you have to let go of everything you know and take a chance. So I went back to college, and the next summer,
I found a place to live near campus and got a job.

Both of them had air-conditioning--and I learned I could live on my
own.

I learned I was more than my parents' daughter.

I learned I was me.

I have spent an entire summer in a house that wasn't air conditioned as well, it was the worst/best summer of my entire life. It was last summer, the one with the record-breaking highs, and the only time I was ever cool was when I was taking a shower or at the mall. My mom, sister, and I spent a lot of last summer just hanging out at the mall doing nothing, it was nice to spend time with them like that. Thankfully, though, we have air conditioning now, so I'm a very happy girl.

That year, we moved to a new house, a very old new house. We didn't have air-conditioning either. It was way hot too. I'm with you, Elizabeth, I LOVE air-conditioning!

How does one survive without air conditioning? Maybe I don't get it because it's always too hot where I live, but whatever.

Is this the first Author Tales of the month? I can't remember...I think soo...

Anyway, goodness! I couldn't live without air conditioning. I get hot super super fast and it doesn't take much to make me sweat...so gross and annoying, so having air conditiong is like a friggin' blessing, let me tell you.

I don't really have a favorite or memorable summer memory. I guess this past summer we just had was nice b/c i became a lot closer to these two friends of mine and it's really great. :)

Oh my, my parents are getting on my butt about that I should work hard in school so I will never work in a warehouse! So here I am in gr. 11, working my way up. Hopefully will never get such a terrible part-time job.

Awesome to hear from an author!

I grew up in a house without air-conditioning, too! Now I live in the desert, so there is no way I could survive without it!!!

Love your blog, Story Siren :-).

This past summer was my most memorable one because I went to Warped Tour with my 2 best friends and had the time of my life :) I don't think I've ever sweat more in my life though, so I'm definitely a fan of air conditioning!

That was a great post. I cannot live with air conditioning. I know that from living without it for about 2 weeks in August a couple of years ago. In Arizona. Where I grew up and currently live. I LOVE air conditioning. My room doesn't get the best circulation in the house, so most of the time I have a standing fan on, but without the AC, it is way worse!

I love Elizabeth's work. She is a great author.

I don't know what my most memorable summer is, but this summer was pretty good; I spent a lot of time with my close friend and won a medal at the biggest archery tournament I attended this year! :D

Elizabeth, you are so interesting in the amount of different jobs you've had. I think its one of the most unique things that it took you long to figure out what you really wanted to do. Sometimes I feel like that because I'm not sure if I want to be a teacher or an author or what I want to be.

Awesome guest blog. :)

What a great guest blog!

I adore air conditioning... but I'm also the type of person who hates the cold, so it can't be too cold otherwise I'll walk around in the middle of the summer with sweatpants and a hoodie =D

My most memorable summer would be a few years ago where for a month I went to summer school and met new friends. In the last month of summer, I spent almost every day with my sister, cousins and friends. We went fishing, singing karaoke, watching movies, going bowling, going to the theme park, sleepovers and the list goes on. haha. It was a perfect summer of being with the ones I love. =)

last year, our heater broke down for like a week during the winter. it was awful. now i know why portable heaters are only used on a cold spring/fall day not a freezing winter day.

I haven't read any of Elizabeth's books yet. I have a copy of Perfect You. I've just totally been slacking. I sooooo want to read Living Dead Girl though. It sounds soooooo good!

Man, that must have been awful! I would have totally freaked. I for one can not handle the heat. I'm glad I live in Washington. It rarely ever gets that hot here and I'm sooooo thankful for that.

Great guest post!

My sister is extremely looking forward to reading this book. With all the good reviews for this book on the blogsphere (and my sister's naggy need to read this book) will probably have me sitting down and reading this book myself some time!
