I have always been fascinated by the advice that writers have for each other. From where we get our ideas, to how we approach the writing process, to the ways we keep ourselves from going insane after staring at a computer screen for hours on end. But I never thought I had much to contribute to the discussion until I considered how my first book, Band Geek Love , came to be.

On my last day of high school band camp (lo that decade ago), I found a moment away from the craziness, sat down at a picnic table, and wrote the following in my journal:

See, the funny thing about band camp is how all-encompassing it is. When you're in these tight quarters with all your friends, you begin to forget about life outside of marching band. Here, on the last day ever of band camp, I'm becoming a little more objective...

I love this place with a passion but I completely lose my ability to think of the future (being home, school, going to college). No, all that matters is this day, this hour, this minute. When does rehearsal end, who likes who, a solo coming up...

Maybe I love it for exactly this reason. I take my place in a microcosm. Despite the stress of this little world, somehow I'm less tense. I know my place, I know the routine, I'm comfortable.-

Josie, Age 17

This turned out to be the basis for Band Geek Love !

Fortunately, unlike my main character, Ellie Snow, no cute boy showed up in the audience to completely ruin my own fabulous trumpet solo (my version of Conner the Troublemaker wouldn't show up for a few months yet). Ellie's story is both a bit more humiliating and more exciting than my own. But then, Ellie is more of a control freak than I ever was, and she probably sort of deserves to have her world shaken up. To find out what she did with her humiliating (and exciting!) experience...well...you'll just have to read the book !

So, I suppose I do have a piece of writerly advice (or at least an observation about something that worked for me), especially applicable to teenagers who want to become writers: Record everything. You never know when a spur-of-the-moment journal entry written at a picnic table during band camp might end up turning into an entire novel.

This book is on my TBR list and i'm really looking forward to reading it, even more so now. She was very relateable with her journal and camp experiences. I'll definitely be looking for this book on my radar the next time I go to the book store.

This book looks really good. She gave great advice. I'll try to record every detail of my so far boring life. Maybe it'll help me in the future. :)

I always wanted to go to a band camp. I pulled out my flute last night for the first time in a very long time. Sounded terrible but felt good to hold it and play it again.

I can't wait to read this book. Sounds great! It will remind me of the time when band was all I knew.

That's good advice. Sometimes I'll think of something and think I should write it down because it sounds genius. Maybe I'll start to actually write them down now. ;P

That is really good advice. I write down a lot of memorable experiences in my life, only because I want to remember them -- I don't want to forget all the fun times.

I can't wait to read Band Geek Love. It's on my TBR list. :)

I need to start writing things down more. I used to write a TON in a journal, but I just haven't in a long time....I still have my old journals though.
I love how she sounds like an author already in her journal! That's awesome. :)
And I get what she means...being in a place like that sometimes is nice b/c you aren't thinking ahead...it's just a moment to moment thing!

:)
nice guest blog!

Who knew going to band camp would inspire an entire novel?? Not me, that's probably why I quit band in 9th grade... well that and the new teacher was a MAJOR jerk.

I'm reading this right now and I love it. I'm a band geek myself (but I play percussion so it's not as bad) and I love reading about it.

I really don't think my school had band camp of any sort...then again we were odd and didn't have a marching band just about ten other kinds ;)

Sounds like a great place to start a book from, though...I'll have to go check out those links.

"record everything" she's so right. The best pieces I've written are based on real life experiences with my family and friends. Of course, though, the book is always more exciting than how it was in real life. :)

I've never had the honour of being part of that tight-knit circle of band geeks in high school. in elementary school, I was taught the violin, so entering high school, I decided not to go for band. Sometimes I regret it because I saw the interactions of those in band, and they're just really close. Well, sounds like an awesome book. And it's awesome that you got the inspiration from your own experiences. =)

Great guest blog Josie! Band Geek Love sounds great! I was in band for like 5 years. I never went to band camp but I'm sure it would have been fun!

It's so great that you wrote your book just from that one little entry. I love that.

I never thought about looking through old journals, that's a great idea! Anytime I've ever gotten some idea, I would slap it down on a post it note or the back of receipts and put them up on my bedroom door. Of course I get funny looks lol. I'm definetly putting this book on my To Read list!

Oh, I need this for my daughter who is drum major and we tease her relentlessly how every story of hers begins with "one time at band camp..." Thanks for the chance.
